Two Peas in a Pod

Brayden and Brinley are like two peas in a pod.

They are 23 months apart.

They have been mistaken for twins.

They have similar first and middle (Kyle & Claire) names.

They both love arts & crafts, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, reading, coloring, noodles, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, mandarin oranges and sweets.

They share a room with bunk beds.

They like to have sleepovers on the floor in their room on Friday nights using their sleeping bags.

They are best friends. May it always be this way!

Playroom Pinterest Project

Kenny finished a pinterest project on the long list that I have for him! He made a wooden frame for the Candy Land game and is working on one for Chutes & Ladders. Not only are they wall art, but also functional. When we want to play, we just take it off the wall and get the pieces out of the ziplock bag on the back. Love it!

Interview with Kenny

I talked Kenny into doing a Good Housekeeping-style interview, too!

The most challenging part of being a dad right now is...keeping our house presentable.

A typical Saturday night is..cooking dinner at home, watching Jake and the Never Land Pirates or the Octonauts, and reading bedtime stories to my kids.

On Sunday mornings we...go to church.

When I want to let my wife know how I'm really feeling, I...tell her how I feel.

The one thing I always do around the house is...wash the dishes and take out the trash.

The one things I never do around the house is...pick out the kids' outfits.

In our home, we spend the most time in...time-out.

On the spectrum of housekeeping, I'm...pretty neat and organized.

Interview- Good Housekeeping Style

I love the two features in Good Housekeeping each month on a husband and a mom with a quick one-page list of questions and answers. Since they probably won't be featuring me any time soon, I'll answer for you below!

As a mom, what's the best part of your day?
I love mornings when all the kids wake up and pile into our bed for snuggles.

What's a parenting rule you never break?
Brushing and flossing their teeth every night.

And a rule that you do break?
Bathing every day- this is quite a chore with three little ones on busy work days. In the summer, it's every day for sure. That's another reason to like winter!

What are three words that describe you as a mom?
Cuddly, creative, organized.

Any beauty products you can't live without?
I've never been big on wearing make up, but concealer is a must for those dark circles under my eyes every day, no matter how much sleep I get!

What books are you reading to your kids?
We read two books before bed each night and some current favorites are: Curious George, Bearenstein Bears, Fancy Nancy, Baby Dear and Bob the Builder.

And what are you reading?
The Mission of Motherhood for our Wednesday night study and not much else right now. I got a Kindle for Christmas and read The Help and Water for Elephants recently- both were really good!

What's on your nightstand?
Alarm clock/sound machine, my kids' journals (I try to write a sentence in each of them each day about something that happened or something funny they said), my journal (I seldom have time to write in it), a spit up cloth, a baby toy telephone, lotion and Chapstick.

What's a time-out for you?
Reading People magazine each week, organizing my coupons and planning my shopping trip, and going to be early.

What a cutie!

Bristol has decided to let me fix her hair some days. I have to try to get her to hold still and work really quickly, but these sweet pigtails were so worth it! In the background you can see her favorite drawer pulled out where she was playing with cups and bowls. What fun!

A Toothpaste Kind of Love

The current sermon series at our church is titled "Unstuck" and each week has a different focus. This week is relationships. Our pastor shared a story that about a couple who would always put toothpaste on each other's toothbrush in the mornings as a small act of love.

We always end our phone calls to each other with "I love you," and it's the last thing I say to my kids each night and when they head out the door to school, daycare or wherever it is they are going. If something should ever happen to one of us, I know that we'll be able to cherish that our last words to each other were "I love you."

Now I'm off to put some toothpaste on Kenny's toothbrush! What are some little things you do to show love to your spouse or kids?

Brinley's 4th Birthday

Brinley had a great birthday! We woke up to a dusting of snow and she looked out the window and excitedly said "It snows on birthdays!?!"

She took Batman cupcakes to daycare on Friday for snack to celebrate.

A Thirty-One bag, of course! (thermal tote)

Cinnamon rolls for breakfast

Pizza and Sprite for dinner- yum!

Brayden decorated his cupcakes with some plastic bugs.

Sweet girl

A New Obsession

Thanks to the Loucks family, my kids are now obsessed with Melty Beads! I remember making them when I was younger and I am loving them, too. The organizer in me was not happy with the big bucket of random beads, so I sorted them while watching tv one day...yes, it bothers me that some are mixed up as little hands get in there, but I'm letting it slide!

You use the little boards to create designs using the plastic beads.

Then the grown up uses an iron and parchment paper to melt the beads until they fuse together. Voila!

Happy Birthday, Brinley!

In our family we have Winter Birthday Bonanza and Fall Birthday Week. Brinley's birthday is today, January 21. Brayden's is three weeks later, February 14. Bristol's is a week later, February 23. Mine is 3 weeks later, March 14. In October we have Kenny, his brother Jim and his dad all in one week.

Brinley, you are outgoing, creative, funny, smart, sweet and fun! I love watching you grow and play with your brother and sister. You love to do projects, arts & crafts, ride your bike, read, do puzzles, play with dolls, play pretend, play with playdoh, cook and color. I can't wait to see what is in store for you this year!

2008: You were 9 days late and we were so anxious to meet you! You're wearing the same Mississippi State sweatsuit that I wore home from the hospital and your brother and sister did, too.

2009: Happy 1st Birthday!

2010: Happy 2nd Birthday!

2011: Happy 3rd Birthday!

Taking Care of the Teeth

We were referred to a pediatric dentist this summer for Brinley (from our "adult" dentist) and he gave us a paper with photos of how to floss and brush your child's teeth. I had to laugh at the floss part because we had bought the little flosser picks before but hardly ever used them. Once we started taking care of the teeth "his" way, it's been a total turn around. No one fusses about teeth because it's all party of the routine. They are "allowed" to brush their own teeth in the mornings and they are using Arm & Hammer Spinbrush toothbrushes, which I got on sale with coupons (of course!), which they love.

At night Kenny and I are in charge of teeth. They put their head in my lap and look up at the sky and it is sooo much easier to see into their mouths. We use disposable floss picks from Dollar Tree and then brush their teeth. Give it a try- I think you'll love it!

It All Matters

I'm in a small group doing a study on the book The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson and we had a great discussion last night. Sometimes it's easy to get wrapped up in all the things that have to happen during the day and to get overwhelmed by this:
 And this

and it made me think of the Steven Curtis Chapman song “Do Everything”

You’re picking up toys on the living room floor for the 15th time today
Matching up socks, sweeping up lost Cheerios that got away
You put a baby on your hip, color on your lips and head out the door

Chorus:
While I may not know you, I bet I know you wonder sometimes, does it matter at all?
Well let me remind you, it all matters just as long
As you do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause he made you
To do every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
Tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do

Maybe you’re that guy with the suit and tie, maybe your shirt says your name
You may be hooking up mergers, cooking up burgers, but at the end of the day
Little stuff, big stuff, in-between stuff, God sees it all the same

Chorus

Maybe you’re sitting in math class, or maybe on a mission in the Congo
Or maybe you’re working at the office, singing along with the radio
Maybe you’re dining at a 5-star, or feeding orphans in the Myanmar
Anywhere and everywhere that you are
Whatever you do
It all matters
So do what you do
Don't ever forget

To do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause He made you
To do every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace
Chorus

In every little thing you do
In every little thing you do

Batman Cupcakes Tutorial

Brinley's 4th birthday is on Saturday and tomorrow is her snack day at daycare. I asked her what kind of cupcakes she wanted for school and was waiting for a response of "Dora" or "Jake and the Neverland Pirates." She surprised me with "Batman!" Ummm, do you even know who Batman is?! I don't think we've ever spoken of, seen or played with Batman in this house. I want my kids to be happy, especially on their birthdays, so I set out to figure out how to make Batman cupcakes.

First I created the bats out of chocolate. I printed a Batman logo that I found on the internet and put the piece of paper on a cookies sheet underneath a piece of wax paper.

Next, I melted chocolate chips in a baggie in the microwave in 30 second intervals until melted and snipped off a very small corner, giving me a pretty fine line to draw with.

I traced the outline of the bat first and then filled it in, dragging the bag a little to spread the chocolate. Then I moved the paper and created another one. I made a few extras, which was good because I broke one when adding to the finished cupcakes. I stuck the whole cookie sheet in the fridge to harden for a little while, and ended up forgetting about it until the next morning, but everything looked good. When I stuck these on the cupcakes, I flipped them over so the flat side was face up.

After baking the cupcakes, it was time to frost! I used to make my own frosting, but no time for that now, so I went with the store bought stuff. Do I really need to tell you that I got the cake mix and frosting on sale and with coupons? ;)

I was really excited to pull out my cake decorating supplies- I don't think I've used piping bags since high school! I discovered the most amazing, easy way to get the frosting in the bags- more on that soon. You put the larger piece down in the bag and snip off the triangle end until you can slide it down to the end. This makes it easy to switch decorating tips later, too.

I used food coloring to make the frosting yellow.

Here's the really fun technique, which I saw on a YouTube video, probably from Pinterest. Get a piece of plastic wrap and dump the frosting in a pile in the middle.

Wrap up the sides like a hot dog.

Take both ends and spin it towards you around and around , which will create the twisted ends.

Pull one of the twisted ends through your bag. Done! Soooo much easier than trying to scoop it in with a spoon and making a huge mess like I used to! You can probably reuse the piping bag with minimal clean up, too.

Snip off the end and attach your tip.

Just leave the other end hanging out, or tuck it in if it's in the way.

Start on the outside and swirl your way around to the center. I wasn't really worried about it being perfect because I was going to cover it up anyway. That, and a bunch of 4 year-olds are going to dig in and not really care what they look like!

While the frosting was wet, I stuck the chocolate bat on. Ta-da!

Making Mornings Easier

I got a great idea a few years ago from my friend Olivia and how to make mornings easier and give kids choices about clothes, while still having some control and not having crazy outfits every day of the week for school and daycare.

Each weekend the kids help me put together outfits for the whole week. I usually pick out the shirts and they can pick the pants, or vice versa. They get the hangers and help me put the outfits together and hang them up.

First, I hang the pants or skirt on the hanger.

 Then I add the shirt.
 And underwear.

We hang all the outfits in their closet on the lower shelf where they can reach everything.

Each night before bed, they pick out what they want to wear tomorrow and hang in on the knob of the closet so that it is all ready to go in the morning.

And the most important rule: Mommy gets to pick church clothes on Sundays.
